Mathematics and more
The project „Discovery in Numberland“ includes aims other than mathematical ones: One of the main purposes of the project is to support the formation of interdisciplinary associations and the development of general abilities.
The aim of „Discovery in Numberland“ is to provide early mathematics education. This does not mean, however, that all the aims of this project are associated with mathematics.
Mathematical Aims
„Numberland“ introduces children to the world of mathematics. The special nature of mathematical objects and their high level of abstraction requires particular teaching methods. The project „Discovery in Numberland“ shows how abstract mathematical concepts can be built up and tested through perception and action. In order for children to understand the breadth of the concept of numbers, the different aspects of numbers are systematically acquired and used.
The focus is on:
- Familiarity with the characteristics and use of the numbers from 1 to 10
- Overview of the numbers from 1 to 20
- Easy examples and the concept of calculation
- Getting to know geometric shapes (two- and three-dimensional forms)
- Solving problems by thinking and combining
- First introduction to mathematical vocabulary and symbols
Interdisciplinary Aims
The mathematical aim of building up a broad understanding of numbers is connected to the interdisciplinary aim of making the experiences in „Numberland“ an integral part of the everyday world of the children. „Discoveries in Numberland“ helps children to build up knowledge about the world and to connect this knowledge with their lives. They discover that the world can be experienced and described more exactly with the help of numbers and geometric shapes.
General Aims
In addition to having mathematical aims, this project also focuses on the development of general abilities. In this project, children develop attention skills by learning to pay attention to new objects and situations. They can improve their ability to pay attention, physical skills and memory. In addition, they can use their fantasy and understanding while acquiring a basic understanding of numbers and their use in nature, culture and in technical applications. Children should learn that learning to deal successfully with mathematics is a happy, meaningful and attainable aim.
„Discovery in Numberland“ contributes to the development of all the functions of the brain.
